Nocturne 3D Sleep Mask - $38.99
At 18:40 the day is still sitting in your shoulders, and the floor is the one piece of furniture that asks nothing of you. Lotus goes on the floor. You lie back onto about five thousand hard plastic tips and for roughly a minute you think this was a mistake.
The first minute is sharp. Then it isn't.
What it actually feels like
This is not a massage. Nothing moves, nothing vibrates, nothing is powered. It is your own weight pressed against a fixed grid of hard plastic petals, and that is the whole mechanism.
The sensation changes while you lie there, and the change is the point. Sharp at first, in a way that makes you want to get up. Then it spreads out and goes warm. Then, after a few minutes, it flattens into something you stop noticing — and getting up feels different from lying down.
Worth knowing before you buy: a thin t-shirt roughly halves it, and bare skin is the full version. Some people go straight to bare skin on the first evening. Some need a fortnight. And some never come to like it at all — it is a strong physical sensation, not a gentle one, and no amount of getting used to it makes it mild.
How the first two weeks go
- Evenings one to three — five minutes, t-shirt on. On a carpet or a rug, not a hard floor. Lie down slowly and in one movement; don't sit on it and shuffle backwards.
- The rest of the first week — ten minutes. Same t-shirt. This is where most people either settle in or decide it isn't for them.
- Second week — bare back, if you want it. Twenty to thirty minutes is a normal length once the first minute stops being a negotiation.
- The bolster goes two ways. Under the neck, which is what most people do. Or under the knees, which flattens the lower back onto the mat and changes where you feel it.
Getting off it matters as much as getting on: roll to one side and push up, rather than peeling straight off.
What it doesn't ask of you
No power, no batteries, no charging, no app, no account, nothing to replace and nothing to run out. It rolls into its own bag and stands in a corner or goes in a suitcase. In ten years it will work exactly as well as it does on the first evening.

Questions people ask first
How much does it actually hurt?
Through a thin t-shirt, on the first evening: sharp for under a minute, then noticeable but easy to lie still through. On bare skin: sharp enough that most people hold their breath for a moment. It is pressure spread across about five thousand tips rather than a few, which is why it is bearable at all — the same weight on one point would not be. It should never be a stabbing or burning feeling. If it is, get up.
Am I big enough — or too big — for it?
The mat is 68 by 42 cm. On most adults that covers shoulders to lower back with the head on the bolster, which is what it is designed for. It is not a full-body mat and is not meant to be one; your legs and head stay off it.
Can I use it on the bed instead of the floor?
You can, and it will be much milder — a mattress lets the tips sink away from you instead of into you. That makes the bed a reasonable place to start in the first week and a poor place to stay. On a carpet the mat stays flat and does what it is built to do.
What is the bolster actually for?
Without it your head tips back and your neck takes the strain, so you spend the session managing your neck instead of lying still. Under the neck it holds the head level. Under the knees it does something else entirely — the lower back settles onto the mat rather than arching off it.
One of the colours is greyed out. Is it gone for good?
No. We restock every five to seven days, so a colour that is unavailable today is usually back within the week. If the one you want is out, write to us through the contact page and we will tell you when it lands.
How do I keep it clean?
Spot clean with mild soap and a damp cloth, then let it dry completely before you roll it into the bag. Rolling it up damp is the one thing that will make it smell. It does not go in a washing machine and it does not go in a dryer.
If it doesn't suit you — send it back used, 30 days
You cannot judge a mat like this without lying on it, so this one is an exception to our usual rule: Lotus can come back used. Take the full thirty days, use it as often as you like, and if it turns out not to be for you, write to us through the contact page. We send a prepaid return label, so you are not paying to send it back, and we refund the full price of the product.
All we ask is that it comes back clean, dry and complete — mat, bolster and bag. You do not need to have kept the packaging.
Lotus is not a medical device and we make no health or therapeutic claims for it. Avoid broken or irritated skin. Not for use by children. Ask a doctor first if you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or take blood thinners.
